Before 2003, the city was known as Slovianohirsk or Slavyanogorsk (Славяного́рск), and before 1964 it was known as Bannovsky (Ба́нновский) or Bannovskoe (Ба́нновское), so called for the medicinal baths constructed near the Svyatogorsky monastery in the nineteenth century; the current name is derived from the monastery itself.

The lavra is located on the right bank of the Seversky Donets River. The name comes from the hill on which it sits—Sviatohirsk or Holy Hill.
