Tuzly Lagoons

Tuzly Lagoons are a group of marine lagoons in southern Bessarabia, Ukraine. The lagoons are part of the Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park, proclaimed on January 1, 2010. The name of the lagoons originates from the Turkish: Tuzlu, which means salty. The group includes three main lagoons: Shagany, Alibey, and Burnas, and also smaller lagoons: Solone, Khadzhider, Karachaus, Budury, Kurudiol, Martaza, Mahala, Small Sasyk, and Dzhantshey.

Alibey Lagoon

Alibey Lagoon is a salty lagoon on the Black Sea coast of Tatarbunary Raion of Odessa Oblast, Ukraine. The lagoon is originated from the old mouth of the Khadzhider River. The length of the lagoon is 15 km, width 11 km, area 72 km². The depth is 2.5 m. The lagoon is separated from the sea by sandbar. It is connected through the Kurudiol Lagoon with the Burnas Lagoon on the south east, with the Karachaus Lagoon and Shagany Lagoon on the south west.

Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park

Tuzly Lagoons National Nature Park is a Protected area located in Tatarbunary Raion of Odessa Oblast, southern Ukraine. The park was set up by decree of the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, on January 1, 2010. The territory of the National Park includes the group of Tuzly Lagoons: which consist of parts of the larger lagoons Shagany, Alibey, Burnas; and the small lagoons Solone, Khadzhider, Karachaus, Budury, Martaza, Mahala, Small Sasyk, and Dzhantshey.

Shagany Lagoon

Shagany Lagoon is a salty lagoon on the Black Sea coast of Ukraine in Tatarbunary Raion of Odessa Oblast. The lagoon is in the complex of Tuzly Lagoons, connected with the Alibey Lagoon. The area of the water body is 70 km², salinity is about 30‰. The lagoon is separated from the Black Sea by a sandbar.

Mahala Lagoon

Mahala Lagoon is a small salty lagoon in the Tuzly Lagoons group. The total area is 76 ha. It is located west of the Shagany Lagoon, near the village Tryhatky, Tatarbunary Raion of Odessa Oblast. From the Shagany Lagoon it is separated by a sandbar. The name of the lagoon originates from Arabic mähallä, from the root meaning "to settle", "to occupy".
