They are included in a Special Area of Conservation of 271.57 ha, which protects land in private ownership and state-owned nature reserve. The habitats include fixed dunes, a type of machair. Lough Nambrackdarrig and the southern half of Lough Yganavan were designated as National Nature Reserves in 1988 .
