Hebron Governorate

The Hebron Governorate is an administrative district of the Palestinian National Authority in the southern West Bank. It extends south to, and includes most of, the Dead Sea. The governorate's land area is 1,060 square kilometers and its population according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics in mid-year 2010 was 600,364. This makes the Hebron Governorate the largest of 16 governorates in both population and land area in the Palestinian territories.

Carmel, Har Hebron

Carmel is an Israeli settlement in south-east Har Hebron area of the West Bank. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Har Hebron Regional Council and associates ideologically with the Amana settlement movement. The moshav was founded in 1980, as a Nahal military-establishment, and was "civilianized" in 1981. Today, the settlement is home to approximately 70 families. The name Carmel was chosen due to the moshav's close proximity ot the location of Biblical Carmel, the home of Nabal.

Ma'on, Har Hebron

Ma'on is an Israeli settlement and a moshav shitufi in the Judean Hills of the West Bank, located south of Hebron and north of Beersheba. It is part of the Har Hebron Regional Council. The international community considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law, but the Israeli government disputes this.

Abraham Avinu Synagogue

The Abraham Avinu Synagogue was built by Hakham Malkiel Ashkenazi in the Jewish Quarter of Hebron in 1540. The domed structure represented the physical center of the Jewish Quarter of Hebron, and became the spiritual center of the Jewish Community there and a major center for the study of Kabalah. It was restored in 1738 and enlarged in 1864.
