1999 İzmit earthquake

The 1999 İzmit earthquake (also known as the Kocaeli or Gölcük earthquake) was a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey on August 17, 1999, at about 3:02am local time. The event lasted for 37 seconds, killing around 17,000 people and leaving approximately half a million people homeless. Even though official sources consider casualties 17,000 people, non-official sources consider the casualties 35,000 people. The nearby city of Izmit was very badly damaged.

New Kocaeli Stadium

New Kocaeli Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Kocaeli, Turkey. It is part of complex of sports venues that are planned on the outskirts of the city, as part of the Yeniköy Sport City. It will effectively replace the ageing Ismet Pasa Stadium.

İzmit Central Station

İzmit Central Station is the main railway station in İzmit. The station is a major rail hub and one of the busiest railway stations in Turkey. In 2009, the station saw 912,500 boardings; the most in its history. 50% of those boardings was toward Haydarpaşa Terminal in İstanbul. The new station was built in 1977 after replacing the original station.
